Two officers at Muchakata Police Station in Masvingo have landed in trouble after they allegedly stole $40 paid as fines by two convicts who had engaged in violence.
Fokoro Bharo (33) and Sherpherd Chifamba (21), whose ranks were not given in court papers, appeared last Thursday before Masvingo magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla facing a count of criminal abuse of office and another of theft.
They were remanded out of custody to tomorrow.
Appearing for the State, Moreblessing Rusere told the court that in March this year the two arrested Jefta Zvinorwadza and Edward Masukume for engaging in violence. The cops then accompanied the two to court where they were fined $20 each.
Zvinorwadza and Masukume then gave the two cops their deposit fines for receipt at the camp.
The court, however, heard that the police officers converted the money to their own use and did not surrender it to the State, which was the complainant in the matter.
The alleged offence came to light months later after a police superintendent, only identified as Ncube in court, discovered the anomaly as he was checking the records of the station, leading to the cops' arrest.
