A 30-year old Harare man, Stephen Chapfika, faces charges of defrauding an estate agent of US$17 000.00.

Chapfika, a former employee of Southgate and Bancroft Estate Agents, is alleged to have fraudulently written e-mails instructing the estate agent to deposit money into a Kingdom Bank account.

The money belonged to some people living in the diaspora whose properties were being managed by the estate agent.

The State alleged that Chapfika used stolen national identification cards and opened bank accounts where the money was allegedly deposited by the estate agent.

It alleged that Chapfika wrote emails on different occasions using various names to authenticate his claims, instructing the estate agents to deposit money.

The crime was discovered after the actual owners of the properties enquired about their money and investigations revealed that Chapfika was the one masterminding the scam. He was subsequently arrested.
