Cashier in court for theft of US$27 000

A cashier with the Institute of Personnel Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ) has appeared in court charged with theft of US$27 000.
Emmanuel Ndonya (24) was not asked to plead to theft of trust property charges when he recently appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Don Ndirowei.
He was granted US$50 bail and is expected back in court for routine remand on March 15.
Prosecutor Ms Svodai Kadivirire alleges that on February 25 this year, Ndonya was on duty receipting money from students of the institute.
Ndonya, the prosecution says, collected US$20 000 and was instructed by his superiors to bank the money into the institute's bank account.
He was also ordered to surrender the safe keys to them. However, Ndonya told his superiors that he was busy and would do the banking later. It is alleged Ndonya did not bank the money and collected another US$7 000 the following day.
Ndonya, the State says, was still in possession of the safe key and keys for all the three doors. On February 28, Ndonya told his superiors that the money had been stolen yet there was no sign of forced entry or a break in, it is alleged.
A police report was made and investigations led to his arrest.
