Road rehabilitation project creates employment for women

THE Government's decision to use local companies in rehabilitating the Beitbridge-Harare highway has created opportunities for women in the male-dominated road construction industry.
The widening and reconstruction of the Beitbridge-Harare Highway is one of the major projects to be undertaken by local contractors in post-independent Zimbabwe at the instigation of the Second Republic.
Apart from empowering local contractors to carry out big infrastructural projects, it has also availed employment opportunities, especially to women, with one of the contracted companies leading the way in empowering local women.
Exodus Company Site Manager Ginny Muchenje thanked government for placing their trust in local contractors, adding that they are ahead of schedule in completing their stretch of the road.
"We are elated by what we have done so far and this project has given us a lot of experience in terms of road construction. We have done a lot of blasting and massive earthworks which will further increase capacity to help the Government in achieving its vision of infrastructural development," he said.
Initially, the government allocated 20 kilometres to each of the five local contractors, with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development giving an additional 20 kilometres each, in another clear demonstration that Zimbabwe is capable of achieving its vision using local people and resources.
