ONE person was shot dead and another seriously injured in Harare yesterday as police pursued an unregistered commuter omnibus.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi last night confirmed the incident.
He said the victims were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
"What we have collected is that a kombi was coming to Harare from Murewa and went through Gletwin to avoid paying toll fees," Nyathi said.
"Because the kombis avoiding the tollgate are becoming a menace, Gletwin residents have mounted some boom gates manned by guards. The driver of the kombi had an altercation with the guards at a boom gate. The kombi crew overpowered the guards and went past. The owner of the house where the boom gate is located rushed to pick up police officers and pursued the kombi, which went past the tollgate towards Murewa, with the police in pursuit."
"The police fired warning shots, but he did not stop. The kombi finally stopped and dumped all the passengers. Unfortunately, one of the woman was shot in the shootout and died while a man was injured. They have been taken to Parirenyatwa. We shall give you more details when we get them."
He condemned the behaviour of the kombi driver, who is still at large.
