Harare vendor killed by lightning

A HARARE vendor was fatally struck by a bolt of bolt lightning on Tuesday night at Wood farm, Mazowe while selling his products at the farm.

Brian Chifamba (31) of Marlborough, Harare died on the spot after a bolt of lightning struck him when he had sought shelter under a tree with his colleague Fedelis Masiiwa (21).

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the case.

"I can confirm a case of sudden death in Mazowe where a vendor was struck by lightning and died on the spot," Mundembe said.

A witness Linda Mugumira told Bulawayo24.com that the two vendors were selling their products at a mining site in Mazowe when it started raining.

"The two vendors were selling their products at the farm and it started raining they sought shelter at a big tree and a bolt of lightning struck killing Chifamba on the spot, but his colleague did not sustain any injuries," she said.

"After observing that Chifamba was dead l filed a police report and the body was taken to Concession hospital."

Police warned people not to stay under trees, use cellphones and leave children playing around during rains.

"We are warning the public that during rains people should not seek shelter under trees or use their cellphones, those with children should not let them play around in case they may be struck by lightning," Mundembe added.
