Joana Mamombe mental exam stalls trial

THE trial of MDC-Alliance youth members, who are facing charges of staging an unsanctioned demonstration in Warren Park, has been postponed to October 13 pending the mental examination of one of them, MP Joana Mamombe.
The youth members are Mamombe, Netsai Marowa,Cecilia Chimbiri, Obey Sithole and Stanley Manyenga.
State counsel Michael Reza said they will be guided by the outcome of Mamombe's examination on the way to proceed.
Sithole's lawyer, Obey Shava, said he will be applying for the temporary release of his client's passport on the day.
Mamombe, Marowa and Chimbiri are also on remand on allegations of faking their abduction emanating from the alleged Warren Park demonstration.
They will be back in court on Thursday. Mamombe was remanded into the custody of a prison officer pending a pyschiatric examination after an application by the State to have her evaluated by two medical doctors after she cited mental disorders when she appeared in court.
Allegations against the three are that on May 13 at around 1230hrs they and other MDC Alliance youths gathered at Choppies Supermarket in Warren Park 1 and staged a demonstration against the recalling of their MPs from Parliament and the alleged misuse of coronavirus (Covid-19) funds by the government.
After the demonstration, the State claims they faked that they had been abducted, claims which the State says had an adverse effect on the country's image.
The alleged false kidnapping statements are said to have attracted adverse comments locally and internationally, derailing the country's economic recovery efforts.
