BRITAIN has seen a 75 percent drop in asylum applications by Zimbabweans, according to new statistics. From a high of 5,544 applications in 2009, only 1,410 Zimbabweans sought asylum in 2010, Home Office figures show.
In 2009, some 210 Zimbabweans who had previously claimed asylum either left voluntarily or were deported, compared to 260 last year.
A further 225 Zimbabweans who did not claim asylum were either denied entry into the UK or deported in 2009, compared to 215 in 2010.
Immigrant rights groups attribute the fall in new asylum applications to the tightening of the UK's visa regime and an improving political and economic situation in Zimbabwe.
