Two security guards in Mutorashanga have been arrested for allegedly fatally assaulting a suspected thief after they caught him stealing from a potato field.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrest of Liaveit Chitato (20) and Tonderai Nyamugonera (26) of the murder of Morgan Evaristo Gohodza (38) of Dzivarasekwa in Harare.
Police said on August 26, Gohodza and three others, who are still at large, hatched a plan to steal potatoes from Kunonwa Farm in Mutorashanga.
It is believed that they were intercepted by farm security guards after they were found loading their potato loot in sacks. The guards allegedly arrested Gohodza and beat him up with logs.
Gohodza, who sustained serious injuries reportedly escaped and informed his relatives of what had transpired before he was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he died the following day.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to the pair's arrest and recovery of brocken logs used in the assault, police said.
