President Robert Mugabe, has challenged local and African tertiary institutions to broaden their curricula to meet key continental socio-economic and political demands.
President Mugabe made the remarks when he officially opened the 2012 Research and Intellectual Expo in Harare.
"The point is that our institutions of higher education should seriously review their curricula across the board to re-align them towards human capital development," said Mugabe.
"The African university should serve its role as an agent of the continent's political, social, technological and economic development. It should not produce students who are totally divorced from and alien to Africa's needs. I strongly challenge all African universities to carry out extensive and thorough research in all fields of human development," he said.
Mugabe said the purpose of education for Africans and Zimbabweans in particular is not only to transmit knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of society, but to prepare better citizens with a clear consciousness of where the nation is coming from and where they want it to go.
".....it is also a time when we have just regained our land and a time when discoveries of new minerals, including diamonds, are promising to put our nation back on its feet. Better still, in this atmosphere of relative peace and tranquility, the critical role of university and technical-cum-vocational institutions cannot be over-emphasized," said President Mugabe.
President Mugabe also urged graduates from tertiary institutions to come together and form partnerships and benefit from the country's vast natural resources since they have the expertise to run the mines and other enterprises.
The three-day expo which attracted academics, dignitaries, business people and government officials from across the country and the region is being held under the theme: "Research, Innovation and Creativity for Sustainable Development".
