A Harare unemployed man on Wednesday walked out of the Harare Civil Court a bitter man after his maintenance claim from his ex-wife was dismissed.
Edson Ncube had approached the maintenance court claiming US$220 to fend for the child he sired with his former wife Primrose Nyamutamba. Primrose is a hair dresser in the capital.
In his claims, Ncube said he stayed with the minor child but had no source of income. The Grade 7 school drop out also claimed that he paid for his ex-wife's school fees and she was now gainfully employed.
"My wife left me after she she got employed. This was despite the fact that I paid for her school fees during the days that we stayed together. She is now employed as a hair dresser and she must pay maintenance fees. I have been staying with the child all along," he said.
Ncube claimed US$75 for school fees, US$45 for uniform, US$50 for food and %50 for clothing. He also told the court that his former wife was now staying with his five-year-old child although he still needed maintenance fees. He further said his ex-wife took the child some weeks ago and was supposed to return him back during the Harare Agricultural Show week but decided to keep the child up until now.
However, his former wife vowed to keep the child although she denied earning US$220 as Ncube alleges.
"I earn US$40 per month and I am not formally employed. I am currently staying with the child," she said.
Magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti, who presided over the case, dismissed Ncube's application on the basis that his former wife was currently staying with the child.
