A Glenara woman and her one-year-old daughter were burnt to death when a veld fire engulfed their grass-thatched hut on Tuesday.
One person sustained minor injuries, while four huts were razed.
Police identified the deceased as Angela Mutsigwa (23) and her daughter Stacey Kumutumba.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector James Sabau said the two resided at Glenara Estates compound outside Harare.
The compound is surrounded by a field with tall grass and dry maize stalks.
"The incident occurred at around 1pm and the fire was started by an unidentified person resulting in four huts catching fire," said Chief Insp Sabau. He said some of the occupants in the three huts managed to escape, but Mutsigwa and her daughter were burnt to death.
Chief Insp Sabau said Mutsigwa's sister, Stancia Mungazi (25) who was also in the hut managed to break a windowpane and escaped.
The bodies of Mutsigwa and her daughter were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Chief Insp Sabau urged people to avoid starting veld fires as this could result in loss of lives and destruction of property. Last month, the Environmental Management Agency said veld fires killed five people since the beginning of the fire season on July 31.
