Nyanga North Member of the House of Assembly Douglas Mwonzora and 23 villagers, who are charged with public violence, have been released from remand prison on US$50 bail each.

High Court Judge Justice Susan Mavangira dismissed the State's appeal and upheld an earlier bail ruling by a Nyanga magistrate.

Magistrate Mr Ignatio Mhene granted the 24 bail, but the Attorney General appealed against the decision.

Justice Mavangira ordered the release of the suspects after the defence team led by Mr Trust Maanda successfully proved that they were proper candidates for bail.

Law officer Mr Edmore Nyazamba appeared for the State.

Mwonzora was ordered to report to Criminal Investigation Department's Law and Order Section in Harare every Friday while the others should report to police in Nyanga on the same day.

They were arrested three weeks ago in connection with alleged violence at Chatindo School in Nyamaropa.

It is alleged the 24 held a meeting at the school, where Zanu-PF youths wanted to play social soccer. The State alleged the group attacked the Zanu-PF youths and forcibly ejected them from the school.

It is the State's case that the gang damaged some buildings and was violent at Regina Coeli Hospital.

Mwonzora is the Copac co-chairperson and a senior partner with Mwonzora and Partners law firm.
