A three-man Harare gang - two of whose members masqueraded as police officers - was last week arrested for robbing a city man of US$60.

Lovemore Mufambi (42), Tafadzwa Chikanya (20) and Christopher Mago (32) appeared before Mbare magistrate Mr Reuben Mukavhi facing a robbery charge.

According to prosecution, the robbery took place on the afternoon of August 29. It is alleged Mufambi proposed to sell a cellular phone to one Mr Evans Marozveni near Rufaro Stadium.

Mufambi allegedly convinced Marozveni that the transaction should be conducted along Mukuvisi River, saying the place provided privacy.

Mago and Chikanya are believed to have suddenly appeared. Flashing "police identity cards", they ordered Mr Marozveni to empty his pockets and surrender the contents.

Mr Marozveni became suspicious and shouted for help, leading to the arrest of the trio.

Mr Clyde Chivasa prosecuted.
