Zimbabwe is short of $10 million to pay enumerators who carried out the once-a-decade national census.
Finance minister Tendai Biti said the 2012 population census had a funding requirement of around $40 millionn, money needed to train and pay 1 320 district level supervisors, 6 000 enumeration area supervisors and about 31 000 enumerators.
Meanwhile, a group of about 60 drivers who took part in the just-ended 2012 population census in Manicaland on Thursday petitioned the Manicaland governor and provincial administrator after the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency allegedly failed to pay them as reportedly agreed when they were hired. The drivers have been milling around the government building in Mutare since Wednesday, demanding audience with the relevant officials.
They claimed that they were promised $50 each a day by ZimStats for the 12 days they were hired but on Tuesday, when enumerators received their money, the drivers were told that their money was not budgeted for.
