MDC Alliance vice-chairman Job Sikhala will remain in custody until next week after High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi reserved his bail appeal ruling to Monday afternoon.

Sikhala is facing charges of publishing falsehoods and has been in jail since January 9.

He was denied bail by Harare magistrate, Ngoni Nduna before he filed an appeal at the High Court.

Last Friday, prosecutors asked for a postponement of the bail hearing citing they had received the record of proceedings late and needed time to go through it before they could respond.

Sikhala was arrested on January 9 at Harare Magistrate's Court where he was part of a legal team representing journalist Hopewell Chin'ono who was arrested on same charges as Sikhala's.

Meanwhile, Journalist Hopewell Chin'ono has been granted ZW$20 000 bail by High Court judge Justice David Foroma after spending three weeks in prison.

Justice Tawanda Chitapi read the operative part of the judgement. Full judgement will be available later. Chin'ono is facing allegations of publishing falsehoods.

The journalist was arrested earlier this month and charged with communicating falsehoods after he tweeted that police had beaten an infant to death while enforcing COVID-19 lockdown regulations.
