Girlfriend beater jailed

A Chitungwiza man was last Wednesday sentenced to an effective five months imprisonment for bashing his girlfriend whom he accused of infecting him with a sexually transmitted disease.
Tapiwa Nyika (27) of Zengeza 4 appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Olivia Mariga and was initially sentenced to seven months in prison.
Two months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
State counsel Henry Muringani told the court that on September 1, Nyika went to his girlfriend, Catherine Mharas house in Zengeza 4 where he accused her of cheating on him.
An altercation ensued and Nyika allegedly assaulted the woman, inflicting injuries on her.
In mitigation, Nyika told the court that he resorted to violence after suspecting that she had infected him with a sexually transmitted disease due to her promiscuous behavior.
Henry Muringani prosecuted.
