Selective enforcement of lockdown rules

There has been some outcry by some Human Rights organisations and members of the public that the government is selectively enforcing the lockdown rules.

The Human Rights Groups assert that while all animals are equal, there are some animals that are more equal than others in as far as the application of the Covid 19 lockdown regulations is concerned.

While addressing the media earlier this last month, Vice President who is also the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr (Rtd Gen) Constantine Ghuveya Chiwenga said the country was going on a hard lockdown.

The Vice President ordered all l shops to open at 8 AM to 15:00 hrs but surprisingly, the directive only apply to the poor while the elite continue to benefit.

This public outcry came after a Liquor Hub Wholesale that belongs to the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Hon Rajeshkumar Modi continues to operate up to 15:30 hrs. The liquor Hub wholesale operates between 4th and 5th Avenue along Fife street in the country's second largest city .

Residents who spoke on conditions of anonymity claimed that the

Liquor Hub wholesale in question is the super spreader of the deadly virus as it allows more than 100 people at a time with no social distance being observed and all other Covid 19 regulations not being adhered to.

" As you can see, there is no social distancing here taking place. People are not properly wearing their masks and the owner of this shop is a cabinet minister who should be leading by example," said a customer who refused to be named.

Another resident also questioned why the Liquor licence is allowed to trade while other bars and liquor outlets where forced to close.

"Surely one wonders whether this is an essential service or yikuthi ishop ngeka Minister nje (or its because the shop belongs minister),' said the resident who also declined to be named.

Efforts to get a comment from the Minister were futile as his mobile was unavailable.

Recently, a ZANU PF politburo member also made headlines for the wrong reasons after he addressed a rally in Mashonaland Central Province and the member was not even arrested.

The public also queries why ZANU PF employees at the Jongwe House in Harare continue to go to work when the country is on hard lock down.

It is such application of the law that has irked the human rights organisations that the enforcements of lockdown is not effective.

While addressing the nation, the President Cde ED Mnangawa warned Zimbabweans against complacency saying the virus knows no race, colour or social standing as it is deadly.

To date Zimbabwe has so far recodered 34 174 cases and 288 mortalities.
