Zim police offers $5 million reward for info on former Rwandan commander

A former Commander of the Rwanda Presidential Guard, Protais Mpiranya, who is believed to be in Zimbabwe, is wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in connection with the 1994 genocide.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police Officer Commanding CID Homicide, Chief Superintendent Peter Magwenzi said Mpiranya is believed to be using various names that include Theophase Mahuku and James Kakule to evade arrest.

Chief Superintendent Magwenzi said Mpiranya is alleged to have participated in the mass killings of 600 000 civilians in Rwanda in 1994 during the time of former President, Juvenal Habyarimana.

He said a reward of $5 million will be given to anyone who brings information that may lead to the arrest of the fugitive.

At least six people are still on the run in connection with the Rwanda genocide.

Sources say about 83 others were arrested from various countries in Africa and Europe and were prosecuted and sentenced to between 20 years and life imprisonment.
