Unbundle of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe on the cards

Government says plans are underway to unbundle the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) into two separate entities, with one arm set to assume the regulatory responsibility while the other will be in charge of aviation operations.  The company, which currently operates as both the regulator of the aviation industry as well as managing airports across the country, is set to be split into two arms in a move expected to ensure good governance and efficiency within the industry.  Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Cde Nicholas Goche, confirmed that the unbundling is still in the initial stage and will result in the creation of a government owned entity responsible for the operations as well as an independent regulatory arm which will ensure that safety and security standards are adhered to. The finalisation of the unbundling process will mean that some of CAAZ's divisions including flight safety and standards will be placed under the regulatory authority.  The recent International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety and security audit reports acknowledges that the country's aviation industry is still compliant with the international standards.    Established on the 1st of January 1999 as a statutory body to replace the former Department of Civil Aviation, CAAZ was given the mandate to develop civil aviation and promote its safe, regular and efficient use inside and outside Zimbabwe.
