ASPRING MDC-T legislator for Buhera West  Professor John Makumbe yesterday criticised his party for abandoning the people for the pleasures of Government.

This, he said, contributed to the waning the popularity of MDC-T which has seen it trailing Zanu-PF in support base, according to a recent survey by Freedom House, a pro-MDC-T research institute.

Prof Makumbe said this during a plenary discussion of a presentation of results of a survey commissioned by Afrobarometer and conducted by the Mass Public Opinion Institute.

Prof Makumbe is MPOI programme director that conducted a survey on devolution, presidential limits and dual citizenship.

The presentation was attended by journalists, political parties and members of the civic society.

Prof Makumbe castigated the MDC-T leadership for refusing to accept results of the Freedom House survey conducted by MPOI which said the MDC-T popularity had waned when compared to that of Zanu-PF.

According to the Freedom House survey, MDC-T support declined from 38 percent to 20 percent in the parliamentary vote from 2010 to 2012, while that of Zanu-PF surged from 17 percent to 31 percent.

Prof Makumbe, though accepting he is a member of the MDC-T, said he was speaking in his capacity as a member of civic society and a person who was part of the research.

Prof Makumbe, who is also a University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer, said it was wrong for the MDC-T to claim that such surveys were destroying the party.

In an interview soon after the presentation, Prof Makumbe reiterated his position and castigated MDC-T. On presidential term limits, Mr Ndoma said their survey indicated most people wanted the presidential term to be limited to two terms.
