Vice President Joice Mujuru said government is ready to facilitate and contribute towards the development of sustainable energy thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels that bring about problems of climate change.

Giving a key note address at the launch of the 2012 World Tourism Month which is being held under the theme: "Tourism and sustainable energy powering sustainable energy-powering sustainability," the Acting President said as Zimbabwe embraces globalisation there is need to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels that are destroying the ozone layer.

She said the tourism sector should start exploiting the use of sustainable sources of energy such as solar, wind and biogas that reduce the effects of climate change which is characterised by high temperatures, poor and excessive rainfall patterns.

Acting President Mujuru said the constant power supply deficit currently faced by the tourism sector can be reduced if both the private and public companies device strategies and adopt technologies to resolve problems of energy supply.

She said theme of the tourism commemorations comes at a time when Zimbabwe will be hosting the UNWTO General Assembly in 2013 which will become a chance for Zimbabwe to show the world how committed it is to confronting green issues.

The World Tourism Day will be commemorated on the 27th of September in Kariba where the country generates clean hydro-electricity.

A roundtable discussion code-named Kariba Tourism Indaba will take place on the sidelines of the main celebrations in Kariba to explore ways to revive tourism in Kariba.
