THE Media Institute for Southern Africa (Misa) yesterday said Zimbabwe and Mozambique were the worst in terms of harassment and persecution of journalists in the whole of southern Africa.

This was revealed by Misa Zimbabwe director Tabani Moyo in a statement yesterday.

"What we are in agreement about is that in southern African, journalists are not safe. If you look at issues of assault of journalists, you will realise that Zimbabwe and Mozambique are going neck-to-neck. It's only that the state of attacks varies in terms of the aggression of the attacks," he said.

"Whereas in Zimbabwe, it is about the police and the military beating up journalists and in certain instances, political parties. In Mozambique, it includes the killing of journalists."

Moyo said Misa anticipated an increase in the attack of journalists in countries like Zambia and Lesotho as the countries were going for elections soon.

"Zambia is going for an election, we are sure that there will be an increase in attacks on journalists as they go into elections. It is the same with Lesotho, there will be elections and it's likely that there are going to be attacks on journalists," he said.
