Zimbabwe receives 1 million vaccines from WHO's COVAX

ZIMBABWE Friday took delivery of 943 200 Covid-19 vaccine doses from the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) facility to complement the ongoing national vaccine programme.

COVAX, is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to vaccines directed by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Receiving the vaccine at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, John Mangwiro, Deputy Health Minister of Health; "We are grateful to all partners for their support in facilitating the arrival of the vaccines in our country."

The UN resident coordinator, Maria Ribeiro added: "We are delighted to see the arrival of Covid-19 vaccines in Zimbabwe through the COVAX facility.

This is an important and tangible act of solidarity from the international community and will bolster the admirable national Covid-19 vaccination rollout by the Government of Zimbabwe."

To date, Zimbabwe has procured over 12 million doses and accompanying injection safety materials using its own local resources.

Over three million citizens have been inoculated against Covid-19 in Zimbabwe.

The country launched its Covid-19 vaccination campaign on February 22, 2021.
