The Japan's ambassador to Zimbabwe broke down Friday in Harare after telling guests at a grant-signing ceremony that the money could not be handed over due to the current crisis in his home country.

'I have to congratulate the people of Zimbabwe on their solidarity message. Thank you very much,' ambassador Koichi Morita said. 'I am sorry but we will have to cancel this signing ceremony today.'

The ambassador had been due to hand over a cheque for 5.6 million dollars to be used for vaccines against infectious diseases for Zimbabwean children.

Peter Salama, head of UNICEF in Zimbabwe, announced the ceremony would be held at a later date.

Japan was last week hit by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami and is currently battling to prevent a potential disaster at one of its nuclear plants.
