Police have defied treasury by continuing with their recruitment drive in what is certain to fuel budgetary pressures in the inclusive government at a time government is facing an imminent strike by civil servants over its failure to award them a decent salary increase.
The police has recruited more officers to strengthen the force, possibly in preparation for harmonised elections next year.
Currently the police force has about 21 000 officers within its ranks and is working towards reaching 50 000 by year 2020.
Meanwhile, Chinhoyi residents have called on government to stop recruitment of new workers, especially in the State security sector, and focus on improving the conditions of civil servants.
The call was made on Monday to parliamentarians who are on a countrywide tour to solicit peoples' views on the 2013 National Budget.
