AN enraged Chimanimani man last week consumed rat poison and later died after suspecting his wife of having an extra-marital affair with his brother. Vincent Mucherera (35) heavily assaulted his wife, Martha Mavhima with fists before he decided to cut his life short.
Police confirmed the suicide which happened at Dombera Farm last Monday at around 6am. Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, has urged members of the public to solve marital disputes amicably and avoid letting emotions control them.
"We continuously urge people to cool down their tempers when dealing with marital disputes. Committing suicide has never been a solution and we urge people to desist from terminating their lives."
Mucherera who was employed at Dombera Farm went to work at around 6pm and left Martha at home. He came back an hour later and saw his brother, Vica, who works at Zimbala Estate having supper with Martha. He also had some supper before he went back to work. Martha and Vica slept in separate rooms," he said.
Insp Chishiri said at around 11pm, Murechera returned home and assaulted his wife accusing her of having a relationship with Vica. She sustained severe injuries all over her body. Vica tried in vain to restrain Mucherera who later stormed out of the house that night leaving Martha writhing in agony. The following day, Martha found Mucherera struggling to breath with froth coming out of his mouth. They discovered that he had consumed rat poison.
She told a neighbour, Nobert Gwanyanya (35), who stays at the same farm. They took him to Chimanimani Rural Hospital and he was referred to Mutambara Mission Hospital. He died on the way.
