Armed robbery cases drop by 22 percent, domestic violence up by 30 percent

There is a sharp decrease in armed robbery cases with 635 cases having been reported so far in 2012 compared to 811 for the whole of last year, marking a decline of about 22 percent.

Police statistics reveal that while the armed robbery cases had declined, there was a surge in robbery with and without other weapons.

According to the figures at least 1 877 rob­beries with other weapons were committed last year compared to 2 023 so far this year while 2 497 robbery without weapons have been reported in 2012 against 2 100 in 2011.

Due to the increase in robbery cases without the use of firearms, an average 20 robberies are being reported countrywide everyday.

The statistics further reveal that domestic violence remained on the increase with 8 372 cases having been committed this year against 6 450 last year signifying a 30 percent rise.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the fig­ures were a cause for concern and the police were making efforts to create a crime-free envi­ronment.

According to the figures, drug cases increased by 9 percent this year with 2 471 reported crimes while fraud and theft of motor vehicles surged 7 percent from 5 302 and 208 respectively last year to 5 681 and 222 this year.

Murder and assault cases rose by 4 per­cent each with 374 and 43 085 cases respec­tively compared to 359 and 41 416 in the period last year.

Theft of motor vehicle contents declined by 9 percent this year to 3 447 while stock theft dropped from 6 640 last year to 6 088 so far.

Asst Comm Charamba said police were worried over the high cases of unlawful entry and theft which stood at a combined figure of 60 383 so far this year.

"We are concerned with the cases of unlaw­ful entry and theft, as police we are encourag­ing people to secure their property to avoid unnecessary loss of their property," she said.

"Generally we have recorded a 2 percent increase of crime rate in the country, last year we recorded a total of 135 577 of various cases and so far 138 268 cases have been reported."
