Minister orders 'transparent' constituency funds audit

Zimbabwe's Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Advocate Eric Matinenga says the government is going to conduct a transparent audit on the Constituency Development Funds that were disbursed to House of Assembly members in 209 constituencies last year.
Treasury released US$10, 5 million for constituency development in 2010.
Of the 210 House of Assembly members, 209 applied and managed to get US$50 000 save for Tsholotsho North legislator, Professor Jonathan Moyo, who did not apply.
In a bid to ensure that the funds were not diverted from intended use by the legislators, Advocate Eric Matinenga said everything is in place to kickstart the auditing process.
"We have engaged the Comptroller and Audit General, the office of the Accountant General and staff members from my ministry to embark on an auditing process in the various constituencies," he said.
Advocate Matinenga said they are going to place the results of the audit on the public domain and there is going to be transparency during and after the whole process.
He said the Accountant General has since assigned officers to do sampling tests to enable them to assess record keeping by Members of the House of Assembly and inspect projects in the selected constituencies of Mazoe South, Highfield East, Glen View North and Sunningdale.
The electorate has on a number of occasions complained about legislators' failure to bring significant improvements in their constituencies.
