Finance Minister Tendai Biti has been warned by the War veterans in  Harare against making careless statements regarding the issue of civil servants salaries.

Minister Biti has said there is no money to improve civil servants salaries which is in direct conflict with what was said by President Mugabe, that proceeds from diamonds should be used to improve salaries of government workers.

War veterans said this when they demanded to meet Mr Biti at his offices at the New Government Complex.

"We have been angered by Mr. Biti's alleged utterances in which he was quoted in some sections of the media as saying that he was going to retaliate if Zanu PF wanted war," they said.

Zimbabwe National War Veterans Association Harare Province Secretary for Lands, Isso Madziva said: "We wanted to meet Mr. Biti on the issue of civil servants' salaries as well as their general welfare."

Last week, Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu revealed that treasury had indeed received US$167 million from diamond sales.

The following day, Minister Biti remained defiant that there was no money to cover for civil servants' salaries.

The war veterans however could not meet with the finance minister who was said to be out of office.
