The seed industry has confirmed its preparedness to supply adequate maize seed for sale to farmers countrywide and for the Presidential Well-Wishers Special Agricultural Inputs Scheme.
According to the Zbc News they visited a Harare based producer and trucks were being loaded with seed for distribution to various provinces around the country.
The operations manager for the seed house, Mr Munyaradzi Jonga confirmed that the sector has mobilised enough seed to cover all provinces and advised farmers to use recommended seed for their regions.
"Yes the industry is geared to meet maize seed requirements for the season. The seed is readily available and as you can see, trucks are being loaded to take the seed to various districts across the country," said Mr Jonga.
He added that farmers should prepare their land and plant on time to achieve a good harvest.
The country requires about 50 000 tonnes of seed maize per year and the assurance by the seed industry is good news to farmers who are expected to benefit from the Presidential inputs scheme launched by President Robert Mugabe last weekend.
Under the US$20 million scheme, over 800 000 communal and A1 farmers will receive inputs ranging from seed maize, fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides.
