More than US$60 000 was raised at the Zimbabwe Prison Services (ZPS) goodwill trust fund fundraising banquet held in the capital on Thursday evening.
The goodwill trust fund supports children who end up in prison when their mothers are incarcerated and widows, widowers and orphans of deceased members of the ZPS.
Speaking at the fundraising banquet, ZPS Commissioner, Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi said the ZPS is facing challenges of inadequate resources and is struggling to meet United Nations minimum standards.
"It is saddening to note that such endeavours are being let down by the unavailability of resources," said Retired Major General Zimondi.
The fund is also used to rehabilitate prisoners to ensure they have enough skills to allow them to live crime free lives when they are released.
Last year, over US$33 000 was raised.
Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu entertained the guests as well as the Harare Central Prison Choir which is made up of male and female prisoners.
