Nine soldiers based at Mushandike Training Camp on Saturday appeared before the courts, facing a murder charge after they allegedly beat revellers at a shopping centre in a revenge attack, leading to the death of one person.
The nine appeared before magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla and were remanded in custody to November 29. Mkandla advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.
The accused are Principal Ziuchi (23), Emmanuel Munovapei (26), Alasta Mudziwapasi (20), Pardwell Mabhena (20), Tinashe Hamandamana (21), Cynosha Ncube (20), Kasafari Mutsaka (23), Simemezele Mpofu (24) and Shinewell Ndlovu (23), whose ranks were not given in court papers.
They are being represented by Philip Shumba of Mutendi and Shumba law firm.
Appearing for the State, Tafirei Tandirai told the court that on October 30 at Mushandike business centre, Ziuchi was attacked by a mob after he allegedly indecently exposed a female reveller by pulling down her skirt.
The court heard that after the beating, Ziuchi rushed back to the camp and mobilised an unknown number of soldiers to beat up patrons indiscriminately.
During the beatings, the State alleges, Simon Phiri (29) was struck with a metal object and sustained serious injuries.
He was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital, but died on Monday last week.
