The MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube has expelled five legislators and 49 councillors for defecting to other parties, state media reported.
In a statement, MDC Deputy National Spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi confirmed the development.
Mr Chihwayi said the legislators are: Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Umzingwane, Ms Nomalanga Khumalo; Gwanda North legislator, Thandeko Zindi Mnkandla; legislator for Tsholotsho South, Maxwell Dube; Senator for Lupane, Dalumuzi Khumalo; and Senator for Umzingwane, Kembo Dube.
The councillors include one from Bulawayo, 33 from Matabeleland North and 15 from Matabeleland South.
Mr Chihwayi said the MDC constitution clearly states that if a member defects to another party, that member is automatically expelled.
He also said the legislators have not been active in party issues and in their constituencies for the past three years.
