A 37-year-old Bikita woman was found lying in a pool of blood along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road after an unknown assailant allegedly raped her before killing her, police said yesterday.
Officer Commanding Police in Beitbridge District, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, said the incident occurred on Sunday at a bushy area.
"We are investigating a case involving a woman who was raped before she was murdered by an unknown suspect who later dumped the body along the road.
"We discovered that the woman's body had several stab wounds in the head and neck.
"We also recovered the woman's passport and a booklet with contact numbers, which then led us to her relatives," he said.
The body was discovered by a motorist lying in a pool of blood by the roadside who in turn alerted the police.
Chief Supt Chinhengo identified the woman as Tendai Zindoga.
Her body was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital mortuary from where it was sent to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
Chief Supt Chinhengo said the suspect is still at large, adding that investigations were in progress.
"We have since launched a manhunt for the suspect and we are also appealing to anyone with information that could lead to his arrest to contact any nearest police station or alternatively utilise our suggestion boxes," he said.
