Government has ordered all housing cooperatives operating in Harare to stop operations in order to facilitate a thorough audit to flush out bogus organisations.
The Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo said all housing co-operatives operating in the capital should stop operations in order to facilitate investigations into allegations that some of them are charging exorbitant fees and allocating stands to more than one recipient.
Dr Chombo said unscrupulous developers and land surveyors are forcing beneficiaries to pay subscriptions which are exorbitant yet there are no developments on the stands.
"We have noted with concern developments in the housing sector where genuine homes seekers are being fleeced and cheated by the unruly elements," he said.
Dr Chombo said he is working with the Ministry of Small to Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development in the audit which will see the registration of cooperatives and investigations into the multiple allocation of land.
Under the audit programme, all local authorities have been directed to stop allocating land to the housing cooperatives until a list of genuine and registered cooperatives is published.
