A Shurugwi man, 52, paid the price of playing Good Samaritan when he was robbed at gunpoint by two unknown suspects he had given a lift from Gweru, police have confirmed.

Acting police spokesperson for Midlands Province, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the victim, Mr Andrew Muzenda had picked up the two suspects near Cathedral Hall just outside the Gweru Central Business District.

He said the suspects later forced him to stop the vehicle at Sungano Motel turnoff before they demanded cash from him at gunpoint.

"The two were given $60 that Mr Muzenda had in his pockets before they allowed him to drive off," he said.

Asst Insp Mahoko said a few moments after the two had been dropped, a commuter omnibus, which was heading for Shurugwi stopped at the scene to drop a female adult.

"The two unknown suspects then quickly pounced on the woman, Ms Helen Chavarika and demanded cash from her at gunpoint. Ms Chavarika handed her HP laptop. She also gave them her handbag, which contained her identity particulars and $15. The two then disappeared into the dark," he said.

Asst Insp Mahoko said the two armed robbery incidents were then reported at Shurugwi Police Station on Monday morning.

The acting Midlands police spokesperson appealed to members of the public who might have information that could lead to the arrest of the two suspects to approach any nearest police station.

"We take this opportunity to advise motorists to desist from picking up strangers, especially during the night. We would like to warn commuters to avoid being dropped off at secluded places when travelling at night, as they risk being mugged or attacked by robbers," he said.
