A Police constable based at Morris Depot has appeared in court accused of thumping a fellow police officer after an altercation in a bottle store.

Zvikomborero Chipondo (32), who is also a member of the Police Band, has since appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Masinire charged with obstructing or defeating the course of justice and assault. He will be back in court on 10 December for his trial and he will be out of custody until then.

Prosecutor Desire Chidanire alleges that on 24 November, Nedson Muzenda (30), stationed at ZRP Epworth was on duty patrolling in Munyuki and and Chiremba area in the company of constables Rwafa and Hore at around 10pm. It is alleged that they arrived at Mothers & Fathers Bottle Store where they found the watering hole still open.

However, a misunderstanding ensued when Muzenda arrested the till operator Tafadzwa Dudzai for operating after prescribed hours and without a licence. He further arrested other patrons who were still in the bottle store.

It is alleged that Zvikomborero, who was clad in civilian attire, was also part of the patrons in the bottle store. The cops approach did not go down well with Zvikomborero and he challenged them citing that there was no one to be arrested as long as he was part of the patrons.

During the misunderstanding, Muzenda took his handcuffs intending to arrest the two patrons before Zvikomborero intervened and instead blocked Muzenda from arresting prompting the two to escape.

The State is alleging that Zvikomborero went on to assault Muzenda on the face and left him bleeding profusely from the nose, leaving his uniform with blood stains. Muzenda, however, managed to handcuff Zvikomborero with the help of members of the public.
