MDC-T Gokwe-Kabuyuni MP Costin Muguti on Monday heaved a sigh of relief following his acquittal on a 2008 political violence charge that had made him a regular feature at the criminal courts over the past four years.

Muguti was freed together with fellow party member Shadreck Kana (33) after Gokwe provincial magistrate Shepherd Mjanja ruled that there was no evidence linking the pair to the offence, NewsDay reported.

All the witnesses who testified in the case exonerated Muguti.

The pair was being represented by Gweru lawyer Reginald Chidawanyika. Both Muguti and Kana were out of custody on free bail.

The State had alleged that on March 25 2008, Muguti, Kana and Nickson Pensele stormed a Zanu-PF campaign meeting at Vumba Business Centre in Gokwe North and disrupted it after chanting MDC-T songs and pelting Zanu-PF supporters with stones.

No one was injured during the incident and a report was made to the police, leading to the pair's arrest.

Prosecution of the matter only started a few months ago after Attorney-General Johannes Tomana gave the green light.
