Peter Beckingham, deputy high commissioner of the United Kingdom (UK) in western India, has supported the warning issued by the United States and the European Union (EU) to India for publishing the names of the diamond companies taking delivery of the rough diamonds from Zimbabwe on the government website.
In an interview with TOI during his two-day visit to the diamond city on Tuesday, Beckingham said that UK is one of the potential export markets for polished diamonds for India after US. Most of the leading diamond companies in Surat and Mumbai import rough diamonds from UK's capital London and Belgium, which is a sovereign member state of the EU. "I do support the decision taken by the US and EU. I have visited a couple of big diamond companies that import rough diamonds from London," he said.
Recently, the US and EU issued warnings to India, UAE and South Africa that it will publish the names of those taking delivery of Zimbabwe goods on its government website.
The $30 billion Indian gems and jewellery industry is not in a position to overrule the fresh warnings as US and EU consist of about 60 per cent of the gems and jewellery export including that of polished diamonds.
