Travellers wishing to go to rural areas and other destinations can breathe a sigh of relief as the government has directed Zimbabwe United Passengers Company, (ZUPCO), to reduce buses fares by 25% with immediate effect to enable all people to travel to their respective destination during the festive season.

The Minister of Local Government, Urban and Rural Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo says the decision to reduce ZUPCO fares was taken to cushion travellers from exorbitant fares being charged by some bus operators.

Some buses operators which were charging $7 are reported to have hiked their fares to $20.

The move by government comes at time when some bus operators have doubled bus fares resulting in several people being forced to abandon their journey.
