The Meteorological Services Department has predicted a wet spell throughout the country from this Thursday up to the 2nd of January. The department has projected a wet New Year for all the provinces throughout the country including the southern parts of the country that had persistent dry conditions and have not received any rains since the beginning of the rain season.
The department's Senior Officer, Mr Jonathan Chifuna says the rains being experienced in the northern parts of the country will translate into moderate rainfall activity towards the weekend before they increase into heavy rainfalls on the 31st of this month to the 2nd of January.
He however said dry conditions which have persisted in areas such as Matabeleland South, south of the Midlands province, the southern parts of Manicaland and Masvingo into the Christmas holiday are expected to change into moderate rainfall over the New Year holiday.
The department has urged people to quickly move to higher ground if they notice that their area is becoming flooded.
It has also urged motor vehicle drivers to drive cautiously as visibility will be poor due to the rains.
The department reminded people not to attempt to cross flooded rivers and streams and to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms to avoid being struck by lightning.
