Two children were recently killed when a bolt of lightning struck the hut they were sheltered with four other family members in Makumbe Village, Chikomba District. Acting Mashonaland East provincial police

spokesman Assistant Inspector Thando Madhoyo confirmed the incident. He said that on the fateful day, the six members of the same family were in a grass-thatched hut.

"A bolt of lightning struck the hut and it caught fire. Ngonidzashe Chawira (7) and his sister Tafadzwa (5) died on the spot," said Asst Insp Madhoyo.

He said the two minors were burnt beyond recognition and their bodies were taken to Sadza Hospital for a postmortem.

Asst Insp Madhoyo appealed to members of the public to desist from seeking shelter in one hut or under trees when it is raining.

About 100 lives are lost in Zimbabwe annually due to lightning.
