THE officer-in-charge at Chakari Police station, Mashonaland West has been arrested for allegedly receiving a US$1 500 bribe to facilitate the release of police officers who would provide security at dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu's show.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrest but refused to give more details.

"All we can say is that we have arrested a member of the force and investigations are still in progress.

"We are still structuring the appropriate charge," he said.

The incident occurred at the weekend when a promoter approached the police for coverage during a show in the small mining town but was told to pay US$1 500 so that police details would be seconded to the show.

Feeling that the amount was too steep, the promoter reported to the police in Harare, who dispatched members of the police internal investigations who set a trap.

The promoter went with the trap money and handed it over to the officer-in-charge, who stashed it in his desk before the officers from Harare entered the office and recovered the money in the desk.

Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri and other senior police officers have been calling for zero tolerance to corruption within police ranks.
