The Chakari police station officer-in-charge recently arrested for allegedly receiving a US$1 500 bribe has been granted a US$300 bail. Inspector Tichaona Laki was arrested after he demanded a bribe to facilitate the release of police officers to man a musical show in Chakari.

Laki appeared in court facing bribery charges and was not formally charged when he appeared before Kadoma magistrate Mr Farai Gwitima on Monday. He was granted bail and remanded to January 14 this year coupled with stringent bail conditions.

Kadoma senior prosecutor Mr Charles Muchemwa alleged that Tichaona Laki was approached by Tavaona Tentius Chamboko, a Harare-based musical promoter, with the intention of having police officers provide the mandatory security at dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu's show.

It is further alleged that Laki, who is represented by Mr Rose Chavi, inflated the prescribed fees and demanded a bribe of US$1 500.

It is the State's case that Chamboko pretended to agree with the figure of US$1 500 and told the unsuspecting Laki that he would bring the full amount.

Prosecutor Muchemwa further told the court that Chamboko later lodged a complaint with the police in Harare and a trap was set. Chamboko, armed with the trap money, went to Chakari and handed it to Laki in his office.
Police officers pounced on Laki and found the trap money in his drawer.
