A Harare commuter omnibus crew has been arrested on allegations of attempting to bribe a senior police officer with US$2 at a roadblock along Chiremba Road. The crew, Noah Nyamukubva and Nomiya

Chivaka, were arrested last Saturday after they were stopped at a roadblock near the intersection of Alexandra and Chiremba roads in Harare at around 7am.

National police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday confirmed the arrests.
He said the omnibus was coming from Epworth heading towards the city centre when the incident occurred.

"A police chief superintendent who was carrying out supervisory checks stopped the omnibus, a Nissan Civilian," Supt Phiri said.

He said the conductor, Chivaka, allegedly disembarked from the vehicle and went to the chief superintendent who he wanted to hand over the US$2.

He was arrested on the spot and taken to Epworth Police Station.

Police say the two would appear in court soon facing bribery charges.

Recently, two touts were arrested in the city on allegations of offering US$10 each as bribe to police officers who were on patrol in separate incidents.

The two had been arrested for touting in the city centre.

Another commuter omnibus driver was arrested for offering US$3 as bribe to six police officers at a roadblock in Dzivaresekwa on Tuesday.

Jaya Nkana (30) was on his way from the city centre heading towards Dzivaresekwa when the incident occurred near Sanganai Inn.

When Nkana arrived at the roadblock, he was ordered to produce a route authority and he complied. He produced the route authority as well as US$3 in a bid to bribe the officers and was arrested.
