Masvingo music promoter and businessman Jack Chivanga has been given a five-day ultimatum to settle water and electricity bills amounting to nearly US$3 000 incurred at a house that he leased in the city or face legal action.

Chivanga (37) ' who runs the popular Liquids Bar in the city ' allegedly leased a house in the plush Rhodene suburb for one year but did not pay rates and services.

He accumulated US$2 900 in arrears.

The music promoter leased the house at number 18 Patterson Road in Rhodene from another city businessman Mr Julius Marimbire.

Chivanga was on Tuesday served with a letter of demand from Mr Marimbire.

"I write to demand that you settle outstanding electricity and water bills at No. 18 Patterson Road Rhodene which you accrued during your stay at the property and are as follows: electricity US$1 369, water US$1 246 and rates US$285.

"I am giving you a period of five working days effective today to pay off, failure of which will leave me with no option but to hand you over to my legal practitioners," said Mr Marimbire.

Chivanga acknowledged receiving the letter of demand yesterday and accused Mr Marimbire of trying to complicate simple issues.

"We acknowledge the debt and never refused to pay.
"We have already made arrangements that the debts to Zesa and council for electricity and water be forwarded to our new address.

"There is no issue at all, we don't owe him money but we owe Zesa and council," he said.

Mr Marimbire accused Chivanga of being abusive when he was approached for payment.

The Liquids Bar is one of Masvingo's prime entertainment joints in the ancient city.
