Festive season road accidents death toll rises to 200

THE festive season death toll clocked 200 following the death of 17 more people in separate road accidents that occurred throughout the country yesterday.
National police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri confirmed the deaths saying Midlands Province recorded seven accident fatalities followed by Mashonaland East which had five deaths and Masvingo with four.
"The death toll is now at 200. 977 people were injured in 1 244 accidents since the start of the festive season," said Phiri.
A 12-seater Madza Bongo carrying 21 passengers, claimed three lives in Lower Gweru and a Toyota Noah which had 11 passengers claimed four lives while others were from different provinces around the country.
Phiri said overloading was also a contributing factor to the increasing death toll.
A total number of 147 people died last year during the same period.
