Bus accident: 8 people die, 57 injured

Eight people died while 57 others were injured after a Botswana-bound bus travelling from Harare over­turned on the outskirts of Bulawayo in the early hours of yesterday.
The accident, which occurred near Cement Siding along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, brings the num­ber of festive season deaths to 209 in what has been termed one of the bloodiest holiday periods on the country's roads.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said seven people died on the spot while another died on admission at the United Bul­awayo Hospitals.
"The accident occurred at around 2am when the driver of a Botswana-bound, Jay-Jay Travel and Tours bus, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it veering off the road and overturning," he said.
National police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said the accident brings the festive sea­son death toll to 209.
The festive season stretches from December 15 to January 15.
The major causes of accidents have been identified as misjudgment, inattention, faulty vehicles and drunken driving.
