Chinese national on US$70m fraud rap gets reprieve

A Chinese national accused of converting a family friend's company shares into his name before stealing US$70 million got a reprieve yesterday.
Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe yesterday granted his application for refusal of further remand.
Liu Cheng Hsiao, 55, was granted the application after it emerged that investigations into the matter were not yet complete.
Through his lawyer Mr Jonathan Samukange, he applied for refusal of remand, arguing that the complainant in the case had no right to represent the company.
Mr Samukange further argued that the real complainant in the case had never been in the country and had not filed any criminal charges against his client.
Prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira said the case was "complex" and that it involved extra-territorial investigations that needed to be completed before opening trial. He said more time was needed for the State to complete investigations.
